Apple has released iOS 4.2 for the iPhone, iPod and iPad which can be downloaded via iTunes 10.1. iOS 4.2 now aligns the operating systems on each of the iPhone, iPod and iPad.

Step 1 – Upgrade to iTunes 10.1

Be sure to upgrade to iTunes 10.1 first. You need this before you can download the iOS update.

Step 2 – Check compatibility

Next, check the compatibility of your device with 4.2

As per the Apple website, the following devices are compatible with iOS 4.2:

  • iPhone 3G
  • iPhone 3GS
  • iPhone 4
  • iPad
  • iPod Touch 2nd generation
  • iPod Touch 3rd generation
  • iPod Touch 4th generation.

According to Apple:

‘Not all features are compatible with all devices. For example, multitasking, AirPrint, and VoiceOver are available on iPad, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and iPod touch (3rd generation and later). AirPlay and Game Center are available on iPad, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and iPod touch (2nd generation and later).

  1. Multitasking is available with apps that have been developed to work with iOS 4.
  2. You can create a free Find My iPhone account on any iPhone 4, iPad, or iPod touch (4th generation) running iOS 4.2. Once you create an account on a qualifying device, use your Apple ID and password to enable Find My iPhone on your other devices running iOS 4.2. Find My iPhone is not available in all countries.
  3. Game Center works with apps that have been developed to work with the Game Center service.’

Step 3 – Backup your Data and Applications

Connect your iPhone (or iPod or iPad) to iTunes and perform a full synchronize and backup.

Step 4 – Download and Install the update!

Once you have completed the backup,  select your device in iTunes and choose check for update.  The update will first get downloaded and then will upgrade your device.
