What is the Proximity Sensor?

in iOS4,iPhone 4

The proximity sensor on the iPhone is supposed to deactivate the touch screen when you are on a call, so that your face or ears do not activate mute, or loud speaker or end the call when you are in the middle of a conversation.

There have been reported issues with the proximity sensor failing in the iPhone 4, however these are supposed to have been resolved with the recent iOS 4.1 update.
